Key Pediatric Milestones to Watch For: A Month-by-Month Guide
Remember, these are just general guidelines, and every child develops at their own pace.
0-3 Months:
Gross Motor: Lifts head briefly, follows objects with eyes, kicks legs.
Fine Motor: Holds hands in fists, brings hands to mouth, grasps objects reflexively.
Language: Makes cooing and gurgling sounds, turns head towards sounds.
Cognitive: Starts to recognize familiar faces and voices, shows different cries for different needs.
4-6 Months:
Gross Motor: Rolls from tummy to back (and maybe back to tummy!), sits with support, pushes up with arms when on tummy.
Fine Motor: Reaches and grasps objects intentionally, brings toys to mouth.
Language: Babbles with consonants and vowels, laughs.
Cognitive: Reaches for objects out of reach, explores objects with hands and mouth.
7-9 Months:
Gross Motor: Sits without support, starts to crawl, pulls to stand.
Fine Motor: Develops pincer grasp (thumb and forefinger), transfers objects between hands, bangs objects together.
Language: Says "mama" or "dada" (without meaning), understands "no."
Cognitive: Plays peek-a-boo, finds partially hidden objects.
10-12 Months:
Gross Motor: Stands alone, takes a few steps (maybe!), cruises along furniture.
Fine Motor: Picks up small objects with a neat pincer grasp, feeds self finger foods, puts objects into containers.
Language: Says one or two words with meaning, imitates sounds.
Cognitive: Follows simple instructions ("Pick up the ball"), waves bye-bye.
Remember: Don't compare your child to others! Celebrate their unique journey and seek guidance from a healthcare professional or a therapist if you have any concerns.
